Tobalong

Nous voici depuis deux semaines à Tobalong, pour notre première expérience de WWOOFing (Wiling Workers On Organic Farms). Cette ferme, tenue par Graham et Judith, est située sur les berges de la rivière Murray et est spécialisée dans les tomates cerises. 

Lorsque nous sommes arrivés, nous avons été très bien accueillis par Graham et Judith et aussi par les 3 autres wwoofers déjà présents : Nicole (canadienne), Icy (taïwanaise) et Adrian (suisse). Le lieu est vraiment magnifique, nous dormons dans un cottage sur les hauteurs, nous avons donc une vue splendide sur la rivière et champs aux alentours. Leur maison est située en face d’un lac avec une petite île où les cygnes, ibis, cormorans, canards, oies, pélicans, et autres oiseaux virevoltent toute la journée.

Tous les jours nous commençons à 8h00 et finissons à 14h30 avec une pause goûter à 10h et déjeuner à 12h30. En fin de journée, vers 17h, nous nous alternons pour préparer les légumes de nos délicieux repas, avec Judith, et à 18h beer o’clock suivi du repas.

En début de semaine, généralement, nous élaguons les pieds de tomates pour les aider à faire des belles tomates, et parfois semons différentes sortes de graines dans des petits bacs que nous plaçons ensuite à l’étuve. Evidemment tout cela est ponctué de pleins de petits travaux bricolages, ménage, cuisine (avec la préparation de cauliflower pickles, tomatoes relish), etc..

En fin de semaine nous cueillons les tomates cerises et les empaquetons pour le marché du samedi. Nous préparons également les autres légumes vendus au marché, tels que, les choux, épinards, bouquets de persils..Le marché est un moment très agéable malgrès le fait qu’il faut se lever à 5h du matin !! Il se déroule le samedi matin à Willonga, à 2h de route d’ici, les premiers clients arrivent vers 8h, les tomates cerises ont beaucoup de succès ! les environs sont très jolis, beaucoup de vignes et de collines.

Durant nos après-midi de libres nous pouvons savourer pleinement les ballades dans les environs et surtout, surtout, faire du canoë-kayak sur l’étang à travers les roseaux, jusqu’à atteindre LA rivière Murray, une vraie aventure !!

We arrived at Tobalong two weeks ago for our first WWOOFing experience. Graham and Judith specialize in growing cherry tomatoes at Tobalong.
 The tomato plants grow in the river flats by the banks of the Murray River. When we arrived, we were welcomed by Graham and Judith as well as three other WWOOFers who were already on the farm: Nicole(Canada), Icy (Taiwan) and Adrian (Switzerland). This is a very lovely place. We sleep in a cottage on the sandhill above the river where we have a beautiful view overlooking the river and the surrounding dairy flats.

Their house is located in front of a lake with a small island in the middle. Many varieties of birds including swans, ibis, cormorants, ducks, geese and pelicans fly, fish and swim around the lake.

We begin every day at 8.00 am and finish at 2.30pm with a smoke-oh (coffee break) at 10.00am and a lunch break at 12.30pm. At the end of the day we are rostered to help with  the vegetables at 5.00pm while Judith prepares delicious meals and at 6.00pm it is ‘beer o’clock ‘ followed by the evening meal.

At the beginning of the week we generally prune the tomato plants to help them produce beautiful tomatoes. We help with the sowing of a variety of seeds for the new crop. The seeds are sown in trays and then placed in an incubator for a few days.

Obviously all this is punctuated with a variety of small tasks to do including housework and cooking (preparing the vegetables for cauliflower pickles, tomato relish) etc..

At the end of the week we pick the cherry tomatoes and pack them for the Farmers Market on Saturday. We also pick and pack other vegetables which are sold at the market, such as, cabbages, spinach, parsley, kale…

The Farmers Market is a very pleasant experience, in spite of the fact it is necessary to get up at 5.00am!! It takes place on Saturday mornings at Willunga which is a two hour drive.

The first customers arrive at about 8.00am and the cherry tomatoes are very popular and sell well.

During our free afternoons we can enjoy walking around and especially we can go canoeing on the lake through the reeds and out the channel to the Murray River – a real adventure!
